New Order today release their first new track since 2015’s album, Music Complete.

Be A Rebel’ was originally planned as a release ahead of New Order’s tour this autumn, but with live shows on hold and their dates re-scheduled to 2021, the band felt it important to share new music with fans.

With a message to celebrate ourselves and appreciate what we have, even in hard times, ‘Be A Rebel’ is an uplifting, dreamy cut of New Order synth pop.

“In tough times we wanted to reach out with a new song. We can’t play live for a while, but music is still something we can all share together. We hope you enjoy it… until we meet again.” - Bernard Sumner

Last week Adidas has announced nwrdrSPZL a collaborative capsule range designed with New Order as part of ADIDAS’ Spezial range. Founder and curator of adidas Spezial, Gary Aspden is a long time friend and fan of New Order and this collaboration was born out of that relationship. The adidas Spezial team and New Order worked very closely on this project, with New Order travelling over to Herzogenaurach for each design meeting and sample review.

The aesthetic of every piece links back to the repeated three-block New Order ‘Tour’ graphic that the band have used for recent live performances. Bernard Sumner has likened the design process to the use of synthesizers in the early 1980s saying that ‘ultimately, the finished article has to have that adidas Spezial look and feel, combined and realised with the ideas that New Order have brought to this collaboration. It was the same when we first started using synthesizers in the early 1980s… the finite possibilities of what you could do with those machines actually became our guidelines and also an advantage i.e. you got the very best out of what they could do rather than just scratching the surface. ‘

The accompanying film for this special capsule range features dancer Rentaro Nakaaki of the English National Ballet.
