2020000

This week, we spotlight Scuti – a 21-year-old South London native whose sound – as darkly enticing as it is deeply personal – is finding firm footing within the UK rap scene. An embodiment of the creative, restless energy of her home city, Scuti has dominated Boiler Room Sessions, Reading and Leeds festival slots, and a plethora of appearances at big-name fashion events for Nike, Balamii x Morley’s, and ASOS – all whilst drawing the attention of international hip-hop production sensation Kenny Beats in the process. Her debut EP, This Is Skoo (2020) placed her firmly on the ladder to stardom – a destiny that feels inevitable as her namesake makes reference to an actual giant star: the ‘UY Scuti’.

Scuti now kicks off 2022 with the release of her second EP entitled Intoxication, a six-track armament of cold crystalline beats and stripped-back, icy vocal delivery. With the haunting tones of the EP’s first look, ‘L’Argent’ stylishly echoing throughout this collection, Scuti has successfully consolidated a consistent sound across the entirety of the project.

Intoxication seamlessly flicks between meditative eastern sampling and venomous lyrical delivery on ‘KitKat’ to the slinky, laidback flows of ‘Eating’. Production co-signs from Finn Wigan (Digga D, Backroad Gee, Kwengface) and music video direction from Honey JD continue to bolster this sub-zero collection of tracks’ esteemed credibility.

The latest video to be shared from the EP was ‘Eating’, a carefree jaunt through the streets of South London estates with Honey JD behind the camera once more. We accompany Scuti as she sways through lyrics, greets friends, and parades upon London rooftops to the hypnotising instrumental.

Whether it’s the gliding vocal hooks on ‘Good Time’ or the R&B infused sampling of ‘Flying’, the stark glacial timbre of the EP’s six tracks persists from beginning to end. ‘How We Do’ is another standout; the tasteful sampling of ominous choir harmonies drift through the track, reinforced by an arsenal of 808 subs and scything hi-hats – the ideal accompaniment to Scuti’s quickfire verses and cold-blooded delivery. The tastefully minimal yet commanding structure of Scuti’s releases has quickly become the stylistic trademark of the capital’s burgeoning talent. It’s no surprise then, that she has amassed a substantial cult-like fan base in just a mere two years.
